German chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh on her first official trip to India. Merkel received a ceremonial welcome by Singh at the presidential palace in Delhi. She then laid a wreath at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial. The visit is mainly aimed at improving trade links with the subcontinent and she is travelling with a large delegation of German business leaders. She is also expected to address climate change and terrorism issues.
