1979 - The Big Bang that Created Today’s World
November 14, 2019
The Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic revolution in Iran, Pope John Paul II’s visit to Poland, the opening of China under Deng Xiaoping, Great Britain’s neoliberal shift under Margaret Thatcher and the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan - these are just some of the key events that took place in 1979.
Forty years on, their effects are more apparent than ever before. Ongoing crises in the Middle East, expanding terrorist networks, the never-ending conflict in Afghanistan, China’s rapid rise to world power, the omnipresent issue of Brexit and the EU’s concerns about its place in the world all have their origins in 1979.
As change takes place around the world at an increasing tempo, we link the global events of 40 years ago to today’s political challenges. Who were the great actors, the architects of history back then? And how do their decisions still influence our world today? A dynamic, investigative documentary that looks back into the past to explain the present.
