1985 – Voting for a one-party state

The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) political party won the national elections with a mandate to create a one-party state.

Many members in Joshua Nkomo's opposition party, the Zimbabwe African People's Union-Patriotic Front (ZAPU-PF), were arrested or killed.
