‘A Great Chance for Real Dialogue’
December 22, 2010
Deutsche Welle works together with partners in regions throughout the world to produce several talk shows. In the Arab World, these include:
NORTH-SOUTH DIALOGUE
Deutsche Welle has been working with the Algerian broadcaster EPTV to produce the television talk show North-South Dialogue since March 2008. It examines topics that are important in both Europe and North Africa and highlights both perspectives. It is produced every month, alternating between Berlin and Algiers. Three guests from the Maghreb and Europe and two hosts from Algeria and Germany discuss current topics. The show is broadcast in the Arab World on DW-TV and EPTV. This is the first time that European and North African broadcasters have worked together on this kind of coproduction.
YOUTH ACROSS BORDERS
The talk show Youth Across Borders had its premiere in June 2008. Instead of relying on celebrities or experts, the show integrates young people from Germany and Egypt to discuss the topics that affect them. The monthly talk show is a coproduction from Deutsche Welle and the Egyptian TV station ERTU. “By bringing together young people from different cultures to meet and exchange viewpoints, we create an excellent platform for authentic dialogue,” says Christoph Lanz, Director of Television at Deutsche Welle. The show has been popular in Egypt. One of the talk show’s special features is that trailers are produced in part by the young people involved.
CULTURE SALON
Corresponding with the expansion of television programming in Arabic to 12 hours daily, DW-TV launched a joint project with the Moroccan broadcaster Al-Maghribiya in November 2008. Culture Salon covers art and culture in Europe and the Arab World as well as artists’ stories. “The bridge between Berlin and Rabat is a genuine partnership,” says Editor-in-Chief Mustafa Isaid. “It brings Arabic and European perspectives together. Culture Salon is an entertaining way to highlight and promote understanding of different cultures.”
Production for these talk shows alternates between Berlin and the partner’s studios and is broadcast by both in the target area.
DEBATES DEL BICENTENARIO
DW-TV broadcast a series of talk shows with partners in Latin America that started at the end of 2009. The series included eight parts, two parts in each of the following: Berlin, Chile, Mexico and Colombia. It was included in each of the partners’ line-ups with the tentative last episode being broadcast on December 29, 2010. It was seen as a conclusion to the “Bicentenario” - “200 years of independence”.
