Tanzania marks 64 years of independence on December 9 as the nation grapples with political tensions and remains deeply scarred by recent deadly election violence.

The atmosphere surrounding the run-up to Tanzania's 64th Independence Day appears tense: A bloody election aftermath, canceled celebrations, planned protests, and a pledged police crackdown. 
In late November, the government cancelled celebrations, announcing a diversion of funds to "fix" public infrastructure destroyed during post-election protests.
The country’s police have declared any planned protest on Independence Day illegal, raising fears of possible clashes.
