A New Beginning: EU-China Summit in Prague

The 11th annual EU-China summit had originally been scheduled for December 1, 2008. But then China pulled out at the last minute, protesting against French President Nicolas Sarkozy meeting the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama.

France, as the holder of the rotating EU presidency, would have hosted the summit. In the meantime, both sides have tried to smooth over their differences, not least because the global economic crisis demands coordinated action. And so on this Wednesday, the current holder of the EU presidency, Czech president Vaclav Klaus hosted China’s premier Wen Jiabao.
