In British Columbia, more than 20,000 people have fled their homes amid what fire officials have described are wildfires with flames up to 100 meters (330 feet) high. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the current situation in the province as "dangerous and changing minute by minute."

How exceptional is the 2026 wildfire season compared with previous years, and to what extent can these fires be linked to climate change? DW put these and other questions to Anabela Bonada, a climate expert at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
