A new view of East German art

For many decades, museums and curators in the west have scorned the art of the former communist East Germany as a pallid, state-sponsored affair. That view is now being challenged in a new exhibition in the city of Weimar, which captures the diversity and energy of East German art and its confrontation with the fractured dreams of a socialist utopia.
