Adidas Pleased With World Cup Teams' Progress
July 3, 2006The French national team's progress to the 2006 World Cup semi-finals has proven to be good news for sporting goods manufacturer Adidas.
The brand behind both Germany and France, Adidas is the most successful sportswear company at the 2006 World Cup. Nike, which sponsors the Brazilian team, still has Portugal in the running for the title, and Adidas' German rival Puma is keeping the Italian team dressed in the semi-finals.
After les Bleus beat title holders Brazil in the quarter-finals, Adidas expects to sell up to 50,000 additional French jerseys, according to a company spokesperson.
The extra fans suddenly willing to pull out 65 euros ($83) for an adult and 48 euros for kids sized jerseys to show their dedication to Raymond Domenech's side could bring total sales of French jerseys to 500,000, an increase of 150,000 over 2002.
Despite the added French bump, Adidas said it expects half of the three million jerseys its sells to be striped with World Cup hosts Germany's black, red and gold.
