Pakistan is ramping up deportations targeting the over 700,000 Afghans who fled after the Taliban's return to power. Germany recently agreed to take in 160 asylum-seekers, but has also rolled back earlier promises.

When the US and allies left Afghanistanin 2021, the extreme Islamist Taliban took over. This put those who'd worked for foreign missions, or promoted liberal causes, in mortal danger. Many fled immediately to Pakistan — but they're not welcome there.

Germany and other Western countries have given asylum to many of the people who once worked for them. Over 160 Afghans left Islamabad on a plane to Berlin last Tuesday. DW spoke with some before their flight, and with others who are still in limbo. For safety, their identities have been disguised.
