Aftershocks have struck eastern Afghanistan in the wake of Sunday's earthquake. As rough terrain and funding cuts hamper rescue and relief efforts, the current death toll of at least 2,200 could rise further.

Thousands of homes have been destroyed in a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday. Survivors recount being trapped under rubble and losing family members. Ongoing rescue efforts are being hindered by rough terrain and a series of strong aftershocks.

The Taliban government and the United Nations have alerted the international community to the urgent need for food, shelter, and medical aid. Afghanistan is politically isolated and is already facing a deep humanitarian crisis after years of war.
