A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has hit northern Afghanistan, compounding the Taliban-ruled country's struggles with poverty and shrinking foreign aid. The disaster comes on the heels of a deadly tremor in August that killed thousands.

A powerful earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, leaving widespread destruction and dozens feared dead.

Survivors describe violent tremors that flattened homes and trapped loved ones under rubble.

The quake adds to the Taliban-ruled country's deepening humanitarian crisis, worsened by dwindling foreign aid and a mass influx of deported refugees.

Rescue efforts continue as the death toll is expected to rise.
