The extreme right wing political party, the NPD, has changed quickly in recent years. It has attracted more members, especially more young members, and has become more dangerous. The NPD is opening itself up to young neo-Nazis, many of whom have criminal convictions for violent offences and racist or anti-Semitic agitation. Neo-Nazis are holocaust deniers, they idolise Adolf Hitler and commit acts of violence. Because leading members of the party have railed against current laws the calls to ban the NPD for its anti-constitutional activities are on the rise again. But banning the party is controversial. Many politicians fear a second failed attempt could strengthen the far right.
