City Portrait Amberg

DW staff (jb)July 30, 2006

Between Nuremburg and the Czech border lies the small, charming town of Amberg. Located just outside of the Upper Palatinate forest, its historical old town is a gem and surrounded by an intact town wall.

Together with the neighboring regions of the Bohemian and Bavarian forests, the Upper Palatinate forest is known colloquially as the "green roof of Europe."

The forest, in large part a preserve with numerous hiking and biking trails for sports enthusiasts, is a true paradise for nature lovers and anyone looking to get some fresh air. Anyone looking to learn a little while out in the great outdoors can also take part in tour with a ranger to learn more about the forest's flora and fauna.

The smallest hotel in Europe

The town of Amberg is just about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) from Regensburg, the region's main city. But Amberg's inhabitants aren't fooled by size and call their home "the secret capital of the Upper Palatinate."

Amberg is the picture of a late medieval town and offers a "marriage" house, which was conceived as a house for poor couples who needed a house in order to wed. These days, it is the smallest hotel in Europe, able to accommodate just two people.

The city is also famous for its many breweries, which just about everyone frequents. Those who want to delve a little deeper into the matter can take "beer seminars" and -- after their visit and plenty of tasting practice -- receive a diploma and beer to take home. Glass creations from the many producers here are also sought-after souvenirs.

The 'spectacles'

Amberg is also known for its beautiful "town spectacles," a water gate construction spanning the Vils river, which once served to protect the town and to connect the new castle to the armory. Next to it, a town wall encircles the old center with a double fortification and several towers and gates.

Some of the most impressive of Amberg's buildings are the Gothic town hall with its renaissance wing, the town's many churches, the "Alte Veste," the new castle and the "Klösterl."

For many years, Amberg was the seat of the government for the Upper Palatinate and this is reflected it its regional chancellery. The town's era of prosperity due to ore mining and the salt trade ended in 1810.

Another place to take in culture is the town theater, which previously served as a church, where performances, concerts and premieres take place regularly. In summer, visitors can sample cabaret and jazz at the July "Summer Festival."

Also not to be forgotten are the events in the Amberg Congress Center and excellent exhibitions in the town museum and prehistoric museum.
