Even if Germany succeeds with its plan for a nuclear phase-out, the problem of nuclear waste will remain. Thus far, spent fuel rods have been stored in ordinary warehouses, even though underground storage would be safer. For many years, the salt dome at Gorleben was under consideration as a nuclear waste repository, but now Norbert Röttgen, Germany’s Environment Minister, has raised concerns about the plan.
