Anna Wintour names Chloe Malle as Vogue's new US editor

September 2, 2025

Chloe Malle is stepping in as the editor at American Vogue, succeeding Anna Wintour who directed the magazine for nearly four decades. Malle has steered all digital content at the title since 2023.

Longtime Vogue staffer Chloe Malle will take over the top job at the US edition of the influential fashion magazine, Vogue announcedon Tuesday.

Malle was rumored to be the top frontrunner as Anna Wintour's successor last month.

The 39-year-old editor is going to be the "head of editorial content" and will run day-to-day operations at the US edition.

She is still going to report to Anna Wintour, who remains global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer of parent company Condé Nast.

But gone is the title of editor-in-chief that Wintour held for the last 37 years — a sign of how much the media landscape has changed over the years.

Malle was editor of online before stepping into bigger role

Malle joined Vogue as a social editor in 2011 and moved on to become a contributing editor in 2016.

She became editor of Vogue.com in 2023 and steered all digital content. She is also the co-host of Vogue's podcast "The Run-Through."

Malle is the daughter of actor Candice Bergen and the late French director Louis Malle.

In a statement, she said she was excited to be a part of the changing media landscape by leveraging the power of a digital world.

"Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled—and awed—to be part of that," she said. "I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor."

In June, Malle interviewed the then-Lauren Sanchez ahead of her wedding to Jeff Bezos and wrote the digital cover story.

Malle takes over role ahead of New York Fashion Week

Malle takes over the role ahead of New York Fashion Week, which runs from September 11 to 16.

Wintour, who is 75 years old, has been credited with reinvigorating the magazine into a fashion powerhouse since she stepped into her role as editor-in-chief in 1988.

She raised the profile of the annual Met Gala, fashion's biggest night, and in 2022, debuted Vogue World, a traveling fashion and cultural event that brings together stars from all walks of life, elevating the role of the fashion industry in society.
