Social Democrats have retained and gained power in the important state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein respectively. The recent elections results constitute defeat for both the Christian Democrats and Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The CDU’s coalitions with the pro-business Free Democrats are disappearing one by one. New governing constellations that would bolster the Social Democrats, on the other hand, now seem likelier.
