Apps for Clean Water

Around the globe, more people have access to smartphones than to clean water and sanitary facilities. But a competition for smartphone developers, sponsored by the World Bank, hopes to change that. Numerous apps show how the internet can be used to help to improve water quality.

To allow more people access to clean water, the World Bank launched its "Sanitation Hackathon" competition. More than a thousand programmers take part each year. Now a digital world map that functions as an open source data bank is to document the quality of water sources.
