Cash payments are becoming rare in Sweden, but growing reliance on digital transactions carries risks. The central bank is developing plans to maintain financial stability even in the event of cyberattacks or outages.

In Sweden, paying by card or smartphone has become the norm, even for small purchases or public toilets. Only one in 10 vendors still accepts cash, and ATMs are vanishing.

Critics warn of exclusion for seniors, rural residents and vulnerable groups, while the central bank highlights risks from cyberattacks and power outages. Authorities have urged households to keep cash on hand for emergencies, but many Swedes ignore the advice. The government is now considering laws to secure cash services.
