Trailblazing British-Canadian computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton says AI poses a myriad of challenges. Hinton, whose pioneering work earned him the title "Godfather of AI," would like to see effective and strict government regulation.

In this DW exclusive interview, Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneering figure in artificial intelligence, shares his deep concerns about the rapid advancement of AI technologies. He emphasizes that while AI holds immense potential for positive impact, it also poses serious risks if left unchecked.

Hinton warns that AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful and autonomous, raising ethical and safety questions that society is not yet prepared to answer. He stresses the urgency of implementing robust government regulations to manage these risks and prevent misuse, particularly in areas like misinformation, surveillance, and job displacement.

Hinton also highlights the need for global cooperation, arguing that AI development should not be driven solely by competitive pressures between nations or corporations. Instead, he advocates for a thoughtful, collaborative approach that prioritizes human well-being and long-term safety.
