Houten, one of the Netherlands’ most bicycle-friendly cities, is testing the country’s first 20 kilometer-per-hour (12 mph) speed limit for cyclists. The measure aims to improve safety as bike traffic grows and faster e-bikes and fatbikes become more common. In 2025, 281 cyclists were killed and more than 81,000 cycling accidents led to hospitalizations nationwide. While no fines are being issued during the trial, officials say the project is already encouraging riders to slow down and raising awareness about road safety.
