Kenyan police say at least 11 people have been killed and dozens more injured during nationwide anti-government protests. Crowds took to the streets to mark the anniversary of the 'Saba Saba' uprising in 1990, when Kenyans demanded an end to one-party rule.

According to a statement released by the state-funded Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), 11 people were killed, and that dozens of police officers were injured during Monday's protests that engulfed the East African nation.

Protesters on Monday were commemorating the July 7 demonstrations, known as "Saba Saba," Swahili for seventh of July, the first major protests that took place 35 years ago. Those protests called for a transition from a one-party state to a multiparty democracy, with the first multiparty elections in Kenyahaving taken place in 1992.
