Attacks on Christians Pre-Planned: Pakistani Rights Activists

05/08/09August 5, 2009

Christians in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore staged a demonstration to protest against the recent killings of eight members of their community on Wednesday. Some protestors apparently smashed the windows of public buses but no one was injured. Last Saturday, an extremist Muslim mob set fire to dozens of Christian homes in the village of Gojra in Punjab, alleging that the inhabitants had defiled the Koran. The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan recently sent a fact-finding team to Gojra to investigate. It believes that the attacks were pre-planned and carried out by trained militants. The government has now launched a judicial probe into the matter.
