Aubameyang made Real Madrid promise
February 20, 2016Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has told French newspaper L'Equipe that he promised his grandfather that he would one day play for Real Madrid.
The Gabon striker is enjoying a stellar season, having already scored 30 goals in 32 games for Thomas Tuchel's side in all competitions.
Such form has attracted the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs, if the German and English press are to be believed, with Premier League side Manchester United being the latest giants to be linked with the Dortmund forward.
Yet in an interview with L'Equipe, Aubameyang confirmed that Real Madrid would be his ideal destination should he leave the Westfalenstadion.
Spain is calling
"My childhood dream? To play at Real Madrid,” said the Dortmund forward.
"In 2014, before he died, I promised my grandfather who was from Avila, 110 kilometers from Madrid, that I would play there. It will be complicated, but it sits in a corner of my head.
"When I was a kid, I watched Hugo Sanchez videos. The backflip I sometimes do when I score is actually an homage to him.
Aubameyang joined Dortmund from Saint-Etienne in July 2013 as cover for Jürgen Klopp's squad, following the departure of Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich.
Despite a relatively modest debut season with his new side, Aubameyang eventually found his feet when he was moved to the front of Dortmund's attacking line as a lone striker. Since then he has been the club's most prominent source of goal and a worthy replacement for his Polish predecessor.
