Austria: Medical Experiments Conducted in Children's Homes

From the 1950s to the 1980s children were given questionable medications in Austrian children's homes and hospitals. A doctor in a Viennese children's home is said to have carried out medical experiments on children, including infecting them with malaria.

According to people who were institutionalized in Schloss Wilhelminenburg, beatings and abuse were routine. Even rape appears to have been committed regularly. If children resisted, the doctor threatened to send them to an infamous euthanasia clinic. There, a now-deceased Nazi doctor is said to have vaccinated children with something that blinded them for hours and gave them burning rashes.
