Austrian film director Michael Haneke won his second Palme d'Or award for best film as the Cannes film festival in France wrapped up on Sunday.

His film about love and death, entitled 'Amour,' took the top prize. The film tells the story of a Parisian husband caring for his dying wife, starring French acting legend Jean-Louis Trintignant.

Second place went to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire 'Reality,' with a Ken Loach comedy called 'The Angels' Share' taking third place.

Danish performer Mads Mikkelsen won the best actor award for his starring role in 'The Hunt,' while co-stars Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan shared the best actress award for playing a pair of best friends in the Romanian film 'Beyond the Hills.'

Haneke previously won the Palme d'Or in 2009 for 'The White Ribbon,' a film set on the eve of World War One.

The annual film festival on the French Riviera was celebrating its 65th birthday this year, Sunday was the 12th and final day of the event.
