Austria is in a quandary: Should wolves be shot or should people learn to coexist with them?

Austria's southern region of Carinthia is sharply divided over how to deal with returning wolves. Farmers report rising attacks on sheep and cattle, prompting a 2022 regulation allowing wolves to be shot within 200 meters of pastures or settlements. Around 30 wolves have been killed, drawing criticism from animal rights groups. While officials defend the policy, some farmers rely on herd protection and call for coexistence.
