Baby, you're a fire hazard: Fireworks stash seized in Berlin
December 29, 2025
Police have seized 330 kilograms (about 730 pounds) of fireworks from a man's basement on Berlin's Landsberger Allee after he bragged about the stash at a Christmas party.
According to a Facebook post by police, the man told guests he kept large quantities of fireworks in his basement and occasionally sold some of them.
One guest alerted authorities. With approval from prosecutors, officers searched the apartment and cleared out the basement in a raid that took place on the man's birthday.
"This birthday party was a 'blast'," Berlin police said in the Facebook post.
In the statement, police urged residents to look at the safety advice for New Year's Eve in a brochure provided by the BAM research institute.
Police said none of the fireworks appeared to be illegal, but the quantity stored in a residential building violated safety rules.
Police said storage limits are set out in the second ordinance to the Explosives Act and depend on risk factors such as building type and whether it is occupied.
Fireworks controversial in Germany
Fireworks can only be sold legally from December 29 to December 31 in Germany.
Public concerns about violent incidents involving fireworks, unintentional injuries and animal welfare have been growing in the country.
The sales are not universally popular, with an unusual coalition of medical experts, police officers, environmental and animal rights activists calling for a general ban.
After a New Year's Eve marked by deaths and injuries last time around, 270,000 Germans signed an online petition calling for a nationwide ban on private fireworks.
