April 11, 2005

Members of the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra bid farewell to their fans with a last concert on Sunday after orchestra officials failed to secure 80,000 euros ($103,000) in emergency funding for the bankrupt organization. Orchestra leaders had tried to find private sponsors after Berlin's city government cut three million euros in subsidies last year. The ensemble's disbandment is the latest in a long list of German orchestras that have disappeared due to lacking funds.
