October 7, 2003

The Bavarian parliament elected Edmund Stoiber for a fourth term as premier on Tuesday. Stoiber, head of the Christian Social Union party (CSU), received 124 of 180 votes, corresponding to the number of CSU members of parliament. Fifty-three parliamentarians voted against the 62-year-old. In Bavarian elections on September 21 the CSU had won 60.7 percent of votes, a two-thirds majority in parliament. Stoiber has been Bavaria's premier since 1993, when he replaced his party colleague Max Streibl in office.
