Champions League draw
March 21, 2014In Manchester United, Bayern Munich got what many will see as the easiest opponent in the draw, made at the headquarters of UEFA, European soccer’s governing body in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
The quarter-final tie will be a repeat of one of the competition’s most memorable finals, when Manchester came from behind to beat Bayern 2-1 to hoist the trophy in 1999.
The Bundesliga’s other representative, Borussia Dortmund, were dealt what on paper should be a much more formidable opponent in Real Madrid, one of three Spanish teams to reach the quarter-finals.
Four-time champions Barcelona were drawn against Atletico Madrid in an all-Spanish quarter-final, while Paris Saint-Germain play the first leg at home in their tie against London side Chelsea.
The first legs of the quarter-finals are to be played on April 1 and 2, with the return legs slated for April 8 and 9.
This year’s final is to be hosted by Lisbon on May 24.
Europa League draw
No Bundesliga clubs advanced to the quarter-finals of Europe's second-tier club competition, the Europa League, for which the draw was also held in Nyon on Friday.
Juventus, whose home stadium in Turin is to host this year's final, are to face French side Olympique Lyon, while Portugal's FC Porto, who knocked Eintracht Frankfurt out of the competition, are to take on Sevilla.
Another Portuguese club and last year's finalists, Benfica were drawn against Dutch outfit AK Alkmaar, while Switzerland's FC Basel are to face Valencia of Spain.
The first legs of the Europa League quarter-finals are to be played on April 3, with the return fixtures set for April 10.
