Traffic flow and emissions are a huge problem for the megacities of the world -- not least for the Chinese capital, Beijing. A new subway line has been opened there, prompting debate amongst the city’s leaders about improving air quality and traffic flow in the lead-up to next year’s Olympics. A thousand new cars are registered in Beijing every day. And the three million cars already on Beijing’s roads are not just providing headaches for commuters, they’re also posing a significant threat to the environment and to people’s health. One study shows that Beijing has the world’s highest levels of nitrous oxide, which can cause lung complaints. The authorities are facing a big challenge -- to create a transport system which is convenient, healthy and environmentally sustainable.
