"I don't see Russia having the capability in the next few months to knock Ukraine out of the war," Ben Hodges told DW's Ines Pohl, Washington bureau chief.

"President Trump sees himself as the grand dealmaker. He has more leverage over the Russians than four or eight years ago," he added. 

The retired general also had an encouraging message for those in Europe who take a dim view of current US policies.
