Benin's armed forces foil coup attempt

Early on Sunday, a faction of soldiers seized control of the state broadcaster and announced they were taking power. The following hours were marked by gunfire, border closures and rapid government countermeasures.

A brief coup attempt shook Benin early Sunday as soldiers seized state TV, claiming to oust President Patrice Talon and dissolve institutions. Calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, they announced border closures and a suspended constitution. Hours later, loyal forces regained control, arrested about a dozen plotters, and confirmed Talon's safety. Gunfire near the presidential residence triggered embassy alerts as investigations continue.
