Berlin – By the Wall

October 5, 2015

"Where can we see the Wall?" is a question frequently asked by tourists. Remnants of the 155-kilometer-long Cold War frontier can be seen at the East Side Gallery, Checkpoint Charlie and on Bernauer Strasse.

The biggest stretch of the Berlin Wall left standing is the 1.3-kilometer-long East Side Gallery. In 1990, a variety of artists began covering it with imaginative, often political works. Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse was the crossing for diplomats, military personnel and foreign citizens. The border barriers remain a popular motif for photos. A section of the original wall can also be seen at the memorial on Bernauer Strasse. The Window of Remembrance commemorates those who lost their lives at the Wall.
