Almost a million people welcomed the start of 2010 at Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate. Under freezing temperatures and light snow, party-goers danced to the hits of Michael Jackson and enjoyed a ten-minute long fireworks display. Musical acts Right Said Fred and singers Jürgen Drews and Loona were the main live performances of the night.

Champagne, beer and mulled wine were the drinks of choice for the evening, and Berlin police reported the evening was peaceful.

The Berlin orchestra also held a traditional New Year's Eve concert. Under the direction of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle, the orchestra played the music of Rachmaninow and Tschaikowsky. Chinese star pianist Lang Lang was the orchestra's guest solo performer.
