Casual with flair
Dutch designer Erik Frenken opened Berlin Fashion Week's official program by showing his collection for Avelon, an Amsterdam label that "likes to be smart without being boring, to be casual with flair."

Airy stripes
These variations on breezy stripes reflect another one of Avelon's guiding principles: "effortless meets directional."

Flaming red
But Frenken didn't restrict himself to black, grey and white stripes. Sometimes all that's needed to reflect "raw edge luxury" is a perfect red dress.

Meet the designers
Avelon's design director, Erik Frenken, was born in Amsterdam in 1976. He has received different prestigious awards for his work, such as the Elle Style Award for best young designer in the Netherlands.

Lacy blue
The second designer to be featured on the runway was Ewa Herzog. Her designs are characterized by feminine lines, vibrant colors and high-quality lacy fabrics, which she insists on obtaining from countries where working conditions are well regulated.

Berlin is part of the label
Ewa Herzog (right) created her own eponymous label in 2010. She combines feminine high-fashion designs with sustainability. Herzog finds inspiration in Berlin - the city is always written directly under her name on her label. "The entire world comes to this capital to seek inspiration," she says.

The finishing touch
Models will be running the catwalk in Berlin until Friday. Over 70 fashion shows are on the program, and several more glamorous events are scheduled as well. While the fashion event had to surrender its standard location at the Brandenburg Gate to open-air Euro Cup viewings, it has locations in the Mitte and Wedding district's of the capital.

Dutch designer Erik Frenken opened Berlin Fashion Week on Tuesday (28.06.2016) with a preview of his collection for the label Avelon. Long, striped shirt dresses and skirts, breezy wrap blouses and platform sneakers took over the runway.
Showcasing fashion trends for the following year, the Berlin Fashion Week takes place in summer and in winter in the German capital. The Berlin event is considered a major platform for new designers and focuses on sustainable and wearable fashion.
Over 70 fashion shows as well as parties and new talent competitions are programmed through Friday, when the event ends.
Major designer names on the list are Guido Maria Kretschmer, Michael Michalsky, Ewa Herzog, René Storck, Michael Sontag, Dorothee Schumacher and Anja Gockel.
Organizers expect some 200,000 visitors, among them designers, buyers and bloggers. Because of the Euro Cup, it is not being held at its usual location near Brandenburg Gate, where an open-air soccer viewing area has been set up. Instead, it is taking place in two locations in the districts of Mitte and Wedding.
Bread & Butter relaunched
The Berlin-based online retailer Zalando also promoted its upcoming Bread & Butter fashion fair by throwing a party with the popular bloggers Dandy Diary on Monday.
Bread & Butter established itself as a cult streetwear fair. It used to be held during fashion week, until it filed for bankruptcy last year. Zalando overtook the management of the event, set to take place in September 2016 - outside of fashion week.
Organizers said their version of the event would be smaller than former Bread & Butter shows and open to the general public, instead of being restricted to industry insiders.
