"Socialist" has long been a dirty word in the United States. But that doesn't faze Bernie Sanders. The senator from Vermont describes himself as a "democratic socialist." If elected he wants to create a welfare state modeled after the Scandinavian nations - universal healthcare, no college tuition and a stronger social safety net. He wants to pay for his proposals by raising taxes for the wealth – especially on Wall Street.

Sanders is actually an independent, but is running for the Democratic nomination. Even though he is the oldest candidate in the race, he is particularly popular with younger Americans. His campaign rallies have attracted tens of thousands of voters.
