Voluntary taxes, minimal regulations for businesses, and a sleek passport: Liberland attracts people with the promise of life freer than anywhere else. Those who have been drawn in to apply for "citizenship” include entrepreneurs, scientists, and spiritual seekers.

The problem? On the ground, there is little sign of the golden future being promised, and to date, not a single sovereign nation has recognized the self-declared micronation -- certainly not Croatia and Serbia, between whose borders Liberland claims to exist.

Is it a sham or an eccentric project backed by millionaire investors? Whatever the answer, new people continue to join the endeavor. DW reporter Florian Nusch spoke with them to find out what they hope to gain from becoming part of Liberland.
