BMW appears to defy the industry downturn. While profits at VW, Mercedes and other major carmakers are slipping, the Munich-based automaker says its third-quarter profit has leapt to €1.7 billion. But there's a catch.

BMW has posted a sharp profit rebound in Q3, tripling earnings compared to last year — though the surge partly reflects a weak base after a major brake recall in 2024. Still, the carmaker outperformed rivals, selling 1.8 million vehicles in nine months and earning €5.7 billion, ahead of Mercedes (€3.9bn) and the VW Group (€3.4bn). Analysts credit BMW's steady strategy, but flat sales in China highlight growing pressure from local brands.
