Boris Nemtsov - Shot in the Shadow of the Kremlin

February 25, 2016

February 27, 2016, marks the first anniversary of the murder of Boris Nemtsov, one of Russia's leading opposition politicians. The assassination was met with outrage and anger in Russia and around the world.

Boris Nemtsov was killed at around 11.30 pm on Friday, February 27, 2015, while walking home with his girlfriend. He was shot in the back on a bridge just a few steps from the Kremlin in the heart of Moscow. President Vladimir Putin vowed to find the culprits. What has happened since then and what is known about who was behind the killing?

The documentary explores the life and the death of Boris Nemtsov. Archive material and interviews with friends, family and colleagues convey a vivid impression of his varied career and the inner workings of politics in Russia.

Boris Nemtsov became involved in politics as a young man in Nizhny Novgorod in the late 1980s. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster he organized protests against a nuclear plant being built in his hometown. A few years later, he was appointed governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

In 1997 president Boris Yeltsin appointed him deputy prime minister. Nemtsov was in charge of economic reforms and was deeply opposed to the way state assets were being privatized. During the economic crisis of 1998 he resigned.

When Vladimir Putin came into power, Nemtsov spoke out for the opposition in Russia and criticized the involvement of the secret service and the military in politics. He joined protests against election fraud in 2011 and 2012 and called for a “Russia without Putin”.

Just hours before his assassination, Nemtsov was on a live radio show, and condemned Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea.
