Around 175 years ago, a slave ship sank off Brazil's coast. Survivors founded a settlement. Today, their descendants are searching for the wreck to uncover their ancestors' history and confront the legacy of slavery.

Slavery stands among the darkest chapters in human history. Over centuries, millions of people were abducted, trafficked, and forced into bondage. An estimated 12 million Africans alone were caught up in the transatlantic slave trade.

They were deported to the Americas, where they were made to labor – primarily on plantations and in mines – under brutal conditions. About 175 years ago, off the coast of Brazil, the Camargo, one of the country's last slave ships, sank. Today, descendants of its survivors continue to keep this memory alive.
