October 17, 2005

British author Alexandra Fuller was awarded the prestigious Lettre Ulysses Award in Berlin Saturday for her book, "Scribbling the Cat," an account of her travels with a Rhodesian mercenary who revisits the places he fought. Fuller was one of seven writers, broadcasters and journalists from around the world who had been short-listed for the award. Her book earned her praise from the ten- member-strong international jury as "a spellbinding literary accomplishment. The dramatic, violent story of war which takes place in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, explores the soul of a mercenary. Fuller, who lives in the US, was unable to attend the award ceremony. The prize carries an award of 50,000 euros ($60,000).
