Prince Philip, the 96-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth, has been taken to hospital.

Buckingham Palace confirmed he is being treated for an infection and his admission was a precautionary measure. The Duke of Edinburgh, who is set to retire from public life later this year, has suffered from ailments in the past.

Queen Elizabeth is due to outline the government's agenda in her speech Wednesday during the formal opening of Parliament. Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, will accompany the queen in Philip's stead.

"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the state opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot," a Buckingham Palace spokesman said. "Her Majesty is being kept informed and will attend Royal Ascot as planned."
