Bulgaria: No Way Out

For Bulgaria and Romania, it's a serious setback: they will not be joining the Schengen area as scheduled in the spring after all. The EU continues to insist on border controls.

Germany and France have pointed to serious shortcomings in the fight against corruption and organized crime in both Bulgaria and Romania. In Bulgaria, corruption is even hampering the development of the infrastructure: EU funds for a new bridge over the Danube have been blocked - allegedly due to the efforts of local ferry operators who fear their business will collapse once the new bridge is completed.
