Borussia Mönchengladbach upset Bayern Munich
November 25, 2017Borussia Mönchengladbach 2 - 1 Bayern Munich
Hazard (Pen.) 39', Ginter 44 - Vidal 74')
It was a homecoming for Mönchengladbach native and former Gladbach player and coach Jupp Heynckes on Saturday evening, but it was the Foals, of all teams, who ruined his perfect record since taking over from Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern last month, handing him his first defeat in 10 matches in charge.
The first few minutes was a display of two teams determined to shut each other down, and the first real incident of note wasn't a chance on goal, but rather, an injury. Christoph Kramer ran into the back of Jannik Vestergaard as both were going for a high ball in the eighth minute and came out the worse for wear. It quickly became clear that he was bleeding from a head wound. He was subsequently stretchered off the field and Tony Janschke replaced him.
After that, Bayern really began to take the initiative, but were unable to create solid goal-scoring opportunities. Instead, it would be a rare counterattack by the home side that would produce the match's first goal. Thorgan Harzard had barely crossed into the Bayern area when Niklas Süle's hand made contact with the ball and referee Manuel Gräfe pointed to the spot. The video assistant referee in Cologne then contacted Gräfe, who delayed the taking of the penalty while the play was reviewed. After a delay of about a minute, the VAR obviously decided there were no grounds to overturn Gräfe's decision and Hazard was allowed to take the spot kick. He tucked in low into the corner of Bayern's goal. Sven Ulreich did well to get a touch on it, but not enough to keep it out.
Bayern responded by upping the pressure on Gladbach's back four, and they essentially didn't let up for the rest of the match. However, Heynckes' men suffered their second setback five minutes later, when on another rare foray into Bayern territory, Lars Stindl had his shot deflected off target, but Matthias Ginter alertly swooped in at the far post for the easy tap in. Bayern had dominated, but went into the halftime break down by two.
The Bavarians continued to pile on pressure in the second half, with Gladbach's keeper Yann Sommer equal to the task every time but one. After a looping ball into the area was headed away by a defender in the 74th minute, it fell to Bayern's Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal outside the box. His low strike went past several players and although Sommer was able to get his left hand to it, it found its way into the net.
Bayern continued to knock at the door for the rest of the match, but just couldn't find a way through.
Below you can read our live coverage of the match as it happened.

72' An effort from an extremely bad angle from Coman is gathered in by Sommer.
68' Bayern substitution: Wriedt comes on for Rudy; a striker for a defensive midfielder.
66' Coman with an effort from the top cormer of the box. Sommer gets a piece of it and it hits the bar, before he smothers it.

64' Bayern's possession is now up to 69 percent. You have to wonder how long Gladbach can keep absorbing all this pressure without conceding.

57' Corner for Bayern. Martinez misses it and Süle can't trap it, the Foals clear the danger.

51' Arturo Vidal turns himself into a pretzel to get a weak effort on goal. No trouble for Sommer. Bayern are dominating the match with their posession up to 68 percent, but they have yet to produce a really dangerous scoring opportunity.
47' Tony Janschke was unable to continue due to a knock, so he was replaced at the start of the second half by US international Fabian Johnson, who slides into the right side of the back four for Gladbach.
46' Bayern kick off and the second half is underway.
45+5 Manuel Gräfe blows his whistle to send the players in for their tea break. Back in 15 minutes!

42' Bayern go on the attack trying to get it back and Lewandowski hits the post with a back-heel!
39' Hazard scores! Ulreich got a hand to it, but couldn't keep it out! The taking of the penalty had been delayed for a minute or so as the VAR in Cologne looked at the replay of the foul by Süle on Hazard. The call on the field stood.
38' Hazard steps up to the spot.
37' Manuel Gräfe points to the spot. Penalty for Gladbach!
33' A clash of heads sees both Janschke and James land on the floor. Unlike Kramer earlier in the match, both are able to carry on.
31' The first yellow card of the match goes to Tolisso for a miss-timed tackle.
29' Although Bayern have been dominating possession (66 percent) they have failed to create and really good chances. A long shot by Rudy fails to trouble Gladbach keeper Sommer.
24' Martinez goes down after a swat to the face from Zakaria in the heat of a battle for the ball. He's good to go, though.
20' Raffael takes a crack from the top of the box but mishits it much in the same way as he did with his first chance.
15' Tolisso puts a header over the bar of the Gladbach goal.

10' This is something you really don't want to see, Kramer is being carried off on a stretcher.
9' It looks like Kramer won't be able to continue. He's bleeding and particularly with his history, concussion is a major concern.
8' Kramer goes down! He ran into the back of Vestergaard, who was going up for a header.
5' Apart from the kickoff, Gladbach have hardly touched the ball yet.
1' Referee Manuel Gräfe blows his whistle and Mönchengladbach kick off to get the match underway!
