No one could accuse the German Bundesliga for not trying all it can to raise more funds. The German Football Association, currently presiding over many soccer clubs facing a tough time due to financial difficulties, has sent a letter to world soccer body FIFA to petition for a five-minute extension to the 15-minute half-time pause so spectators can buy more beer and sausages. A study carried out by the Schalke 04 club, reported in German tabloid Bild’s sports pages, shows that a possible €300,000 ($381,000) per season per club could be generated. Other clubs have investigated the possibility and have concluded that 15 minutes is not enough for some fans, and as a result not all go for mid-game refreshments.
