By Train Along the Fjord Coast of Norway
July 21, 2025
The Norwegian Nordland Railway runs from Trondheim along fjords and rivers, up to the Arctic Circle, via Saltfjellet with the Svartisen glacier to Bodø.
On beautiful June days, the fjord coasts of northern Norway reveal themselves in the breathtaking light of the midnight sun. The Nordland Railway crosses the bright night even in rough Nordic weather and winds its way along the banks of fjords and rivers up to the Arctic Circle.
It crosses the barren Saltfjellet plateau with the Svartisen glacier to reach Saltstraumen, Norway's strongest tidal stream, just in time for the Midsummer Festival.
Along the train route from Trondheim to Bodø, the Vikings fought, the Nazis built spectacular bridges and tunnels and the Sami, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, still breed reindeer today. A water-rich, wild landscape that draws world-class canoeists and ambitious painters -- and a place where countless moose and the rare Arctic fox live.
