The UN climate talks in Brazil have been overshadowded by Washington's refusal to send an official delegation. But California's governor Gavin Newsom has nonetheless played a high-profile role at the conference.

At the UN climate summit, California Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the economic stakes of the climate crisis and warned of China's push to dominate clean energy. With the Trump administration absent after pulling out of the Paris Agreement, Newsom positioned California as a leader in renewables, pledging to compete globally as experts fear US inaction could influence other nations.
