From 1970s oil shocks to Dieselgate, crisis was often the mother of invention for the auto industry. Today, legacy brands must deal with electrification, software, geopolitics and Chinese competition. A new car is born?

The legacy car industry is currently facing a transformation unlike any other. It's crisis of profitability, technology, suppliers, skills and competition all at once. Pivoting from internal combustion engines to EVs is costly, yet success isn't guaranteed. Traditional carmakers, especially from Germany, have lost the Chinese market to tech-forward domestic brands. Carmakers must now be software companies, too. So who will win the next automotive age? While most EV makers focus on boosting battery power to increase range, Aptera aims to make its solar-powered cars use as little energy as possible. So the car of the future may not only be electric. In an era of mounting climate pressures and diminishing natural resources, smaller, lighter and more energy-efficient looks to be the way to go.
